I have been enlightened.  I am turning over a new leaf.  If I can't buy it at Barney's I won't be buying it.  Love the store.  Love the salespeople.  But I am deeply in love with the merchandise.  I fell in one day last week for no real purpose other than to look and came out with new under wear to go with my new Zegna I bought at the prior sale.  I was going to a wedding and wanted an extra fashion lift, albeit unseen for the most part, and came to find a new pleasure.  Zimmerli undershirts and Barney's boxers.  ta da!

"How may I insult you today?"

"I only wait on people wearing already wearing Prada."

"If I keep pretending you're not there you'll eventually disappear."

While these may not be statements I've actually overheard at Barneys, it is certainly the way the staff makes you feel.  Shopping should not be an intimidationthon.

Unfortunately, the only thing Barneys has imported intact from New York is the snooty, aloof service complete with catty banter.  The store is hideously ugly.  The main floor couldn't be any less inviting or poorly laid out.  In fact, all the floors are poorly laid out, replete with bizarre angles.

SF waited so long for a Barneys.  Can we ask for a do-over?

SO I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!
I've been a shopper all my life... coming from Portland, Barney was a great suprise for me... I was so use to shopping at Saks and Nordy and other boutiques in Portland, but WOW, SF defin has better shopping.
I love this place because they carry things that many stores don't.  I love the fact that they carry amazing denim collection and have people who really understand the complication of denim. I'm a denim junky! Love the fact they support new and up coming designers.
They have things that the other big stores don't carry...

For a good shopping experience go here!

People are nice and friendly and experienced!

I'm an avid shopper and I've worked in the clothing business for some time, so I feel I can be an authority on luxury department stores.

Like many department stores in Union Square, Barney's New York caters more so to women, the uber-chic "Sex and the City" crowd, than it does to men who expect the same quality and service. Don't get me wrong, they offer some of Europe's finest labels for men: Brioni, Canali, Zegna, and several others, but the selection is so-so.

The mens' sportswear department is geared toward a particular demographic: young, affluent guys suffering from anorexia nervosa. I bought a pair of jeans from there, they fit nice, but the sales clerk was just that, "a clerk". He didn't try to "sell" me anything else nor did he mention that they offer free alterations (I took the jeans to my tailor to have him shorten them...he's a genius so I wasn't too butt hurt).

All in all, a man is better off going to Wilkes on Sutter, Barcelino on Post, or (my store!) Gene Hiller in Sausalito, or, to a lesser extent, the basement at Neiman Marcus (although they have THE BEST neckwear collection in the city, hands down) if he wants to get some grown up clothes. If he wants to look like a hip 20-something with an eating disorder, Barney's is certainly his spot (the sportswear department that is).

I would elaborate on the ladies' departments more, but who cares...they have enough stores.

Out of the big downtown department stores, Barneys' fragrance section is starting to be my go to place for candles.  While the selection at Bloomingdale's is boring (they carry some of the same candles as Whole Foods, for Christsakes) and the candles molder in the dust and sun near the front entry of Neiman Marcus, Barneys has a collection of candles to match every mood:

-DL & Co candles for when you feel like an opulent goth.
-The Apothia line for that seductive LA bachelor feel.
-The Comme De Garcons line for when you are in an artsy mood (The CDG 8 88 candle, in particular, is an item of almost garish beauty, it's a shame that it's bling bling gold).

With this plethora of choices, it's very difficult for me visit the adjacent Kiehl's counter without leaving the store with a candle with a burn rate of $1.00-$1.50/hour.

Can't believe I didn't make it here sooner...almost a year has passed but I guess late is better than never, right?

It's small but very well structured - classy and elegant but not stuffy nor snooty.  The downstairs handbag department has gorgeous purses.  The shoes on the 2nd floor is fantastic - small but full of all the wonderful brands with styles from stylish to classic.  Every floor was a discovery with wonderful selection - all with an edge.

I broke down and got 2 purses - one brown suede and linen Sissi Rossi and one navy Marc Jacobs.   The salesman was fabulous and very helpful with my selection - he was very convincing that I should get both instead of debating which one.  With that, he suggested opening an account for a 10% discount to offset the dent...great idea, I can buy my patient hubby a good meal with the savings.

Barney's is a fabulous department store.  I love the San Francisco store for what it is.  I say that because i still feel it is a bit small for such a store.  I wish they had more room so they could have put in one of their restaurants, like a Greengrass.  I havent been to one to really say how the food/service is at them, but i would have appreciated putting one so close in SF for me to find out.

As for the service of the department store, i wouldnt describe it as snooty, per se.  That is, if you walk in there, you're not going to get dirty looks from the staff... You might just not be helped right away.  Nevertheless, the place still gets excellent reviews from me because i enjoy the store regardless.

For men looking for suits, i reccommend Barney's as an excellent location with its variety and service.  I also highly reccommend you seek out a man by the name of Bill Bragman.  He works in men's suiting on the 6th floor is such a nice, well mannered, pleasant man who has the best pair of eye-glasses ever!  I walked in there wearing nothing but a shirt, shorts, and sneakers (it was a casual day) and he treated me very well (compared to the others who kinda just past me off).  So purchase your goods from him.  He deserves it.

My dad considers himself just gay enough to love shopping but just straight enough to still like my mom's tatas.

I consider him about 90% gay.  You only need approximately 10% to 20% to stick your p in a va-gee anyway.

He does, however, recognize and acknowledge an attractive man when he sees one.

95% gay?

So...I know you're wondering what it's like to have a gay dad.  Well, I'm here to tell you that it's like 8 times better than having a gay best friend.

Know why?

My gay dad likes to shop with me.  And my gay dad doesn't like to hit Nordstrom's or Macy's.  My gay dad likes Barney's, Saks and Neiman's.

He knows when the sales start, he knows when it's last call, he will bargain with the salesman and just recently called me to let me know his "guy" at Barney's, Jimmy Two Shoes,  just informed him that the Gucci he recently purchased for 1.2k just went on sale AGAIN and to come in for a price adjustment.  He knows the difference between a Manolo pump, a Jimmy Choo Wedge and an LV sandal.   He bought me my first Prada.  But the best and most important part about having a gay dad, is having my gay dad.

He understands my addiction.  He agrees that shopping is indeed the best therapy and that it is never NOT fun.  Finally, he likes to buy me things that look pretty and are too expensive for this Cinderella to buy on her own.

For Father's day he didn't want to BBQ.  He didn't want to "watch a game".  He didn't want to drink some beer and put his hand in his pants.  He wanted to go shopping.  We started at Shreve and Co. to pick out a little something something for the Mrs. G.  Afterwords he looked at me with a gleam in his eye and said, "Barney's is having their sale".

I knew it was on like a super gay version of Donkey Kong.

Gay dad and I went to Barney's and he literally held me hostage on the 4th floor while I tried on 8 gazillion dresses and flounced around in each one for him.  He told me we would not leave until I found something I wanted.

I was stuck between a Kimono-Style Black number and a brightly colored and patterned silk spaghetti strap party dress.  It took an hour for me to decide.  Gay dad was the picture of patience as he thumbed through Diane Von Furstenburg maxi dresses and Marc Jacobs tunics.

Gay dad liked the silky, silky and finally sold me on it like only gay men know how.  "Your waist looks tiny, your legs look fierce.  Work it."

(ok - so he didn't say fierce or work it - but you get the point)

Three hundred and something later, we were done with the clothes and perusing shoes, when it occurred to me that although my dad isn't really gay, he is the best gay dad a girl could hope for.  Who needs to be taught baseball when they can be shown the light that is Barney's?

Now, if I could only make my mom a little less gay, she would probably like shopping as much as my gay dad, and that my friends, would be what I like to call the Pseudo Gay Parent Shopping Dream Team.

Highend.  Live the high life and you end up shopping here.  The shoes!  The handbags!  The jewelry and cosmetics!  Bloomy's and Nordstrom can't even compare.  And they are less of a snob than Neiman Marcus.  Perfect.

Even though I received great service in the contemporary department, the service throughout the rest of the store is so snobby!  Maybe they are just bored because there is so little great merchandise to choose from. San Francisco deserves a big, giant, well-stocked Barney's at least like L.A.'s but better like N.Y.'s.

I love this store. The customer service is great and they definitely know how to tell the difference between someone who's just browsing and someone who's going to want to be helped (always a huge plus- I hate being pestered, but then when someone offers you a fitting room at just the right moment it's very helpful). The second floor womens' designer rtw is probably the best single floor of fashion in San Francisco (Givenchy, Lanvin, Balenciaga, and Rick Owens to die for) and the men's floor is very good as well. I'd go in here over NM or Saks any day.

I can confidently, and oh so gladly say Barney's is still my fave department store. I love love the new San Francisco store. It is large, and the space gets great light. The interior has a lot of cream tones and keeps the mood light and happy as you browse your Christian Louboutin's and Manolo's. The grand staircase is pretty, and adds to the elegant foyer. The back staircases provide a nice contrast, being wooden and a bit more artsy.

I have been to this location on numerous shopping jaunts and  have always received gracious customer service. The thing I love about Barney's (all the ones I have been to, so far) is the staff here generally is attentive enough to keep your hands free (so you can shop easily), yet not pushy in the sense of "hello commission", I mean "hello Miss/Sir". I find the people at Barney's tend to be much more truly into fashion, what it means, and what it can turn into. I appreciate an available, approachable, but at times aloof (meaning please don't follow me around the store) sales associate.

The San Francisco Barney's has great merchandise and a great staff (as far as I have seen). I am so looking forward to the upcoming fall lines!! And the only reason I left off one star is because I do prefer the Los Angeles location slightly (it was my first).

The girls and guys at the cosmetic counters have always been terribly helpful on my stops at Barney's. The ladies at the Chanel counter? Lovely. I went looking for a new eyeshadow palette and met this great girl at the counter at Chanel. She was adorable with messy hair in a bun and big round black glasses with braces. She was geeky, chic. Too adorable. We chatted a bit about NY and SF while she applied makeup on me. She has a great eye for color tones and the palette she used on me looked gorgeous. Thank you.

So every time I go into Barney's I have a fantasy. I dream that I will be looking at shoes and find the perfect pair by Christian Leboutin. I'll put them on, linger in front of the mirror, only to say to myself with a sigh "C'mon Kelsey, you can't spend $800 on a pair of shoes." Suddenly, a handsome, or at least very generous man (of any age) walks over and says, "Those shoes look gorgeous on you. Let me buy them for you." I gasp and smile, and tell him that's far too kind, but he insists. He buys me the shoes with no strings attached, and I get his contact info so I can send a nice thank you present.

Guess what. This never happens. Instead I generally leave feeling bad about not being able to buy anything. I like Barney's very much for what's inside, but I give it 3 stars for making me cry...maybe that's an exaggeration but you get the idea.

My opinion from my first experience the other day: This place sucks. The staff was pretentious, unfriendly and unapproachable. Not one person acknowledged me. (I wasn't dressed in rags either) Also the layout of the store just plain sucks. Put FAO Schwartz back here. We need a good toystore in Downtown SF!!! We have enough pretentious stores in SF. Anyway, you won't catch me here again. I'd rather shop at Saks or Neiman's before coming here.

You gotta be kidding me, right?  Barneys is touted as one of THE dept. stores with exceptional decor and design.  What happened here?

I came in experiencing some type of design epiphany and marveling at their merchandising display but no - the colors were bland, the lighting seemed off and the way the shoes were on display didn't inspire any "oohs" or "aahs"

I was very disappointed.but then again I was expecting Barneys New York.

So my Mom wants to check out this Barneys but I was skeptical a bit. Like most Barneys, the store was smaller than most department stores around Union Square.

Mom said: "Let's check out the handbag first!" So we did, smaller selection of selective brands that more popular in the East Coast & Europe not so mainstream but still Haute Culture such as Lanvin, Bottega, Jil Sander, Givenchy, Lambertson Truex (which I love!) Then Mom said: 'Let's check out jewelry!" Not much, practically nothing to impress us! Then she said "Let's check out shoes!" Up stair at the Designers, now it gets much more interesting, a great selection of Louboutin, Zanotti, Prada, & decent selections of Morrison, Marc Jacobs, & very small selection of Blahnik!

It's still a very lovely store but for some reason, the design & layout of the store just don't it for me. I need more space when I shop. walking up stair with some shopping bags on my arms, my Mom & I tried to avoid others walking down. I was irritated by how cramped it was for us there! & it's not like my mom was big, she's only 5'4" and 100 lbs! Yikes!

I wonder if they thought it through fully when they designed the store, maybe the space is too expensive in SF, but it can't be more expensive than their locations in Manhattan or Chi-Town?

NOTE: This review is only for the 4th floor women's Co-op level

I experienced some of the best customer service I've gotten in a while at this store thanks to Jorge the friendly Co-op employee. I've been to other Co-Op locations and although this store is comparatively small to what I'm used to, the selection is rather diverse and well presented. I never thought I'd be able to find a great deal on anything at Barney's, but their summer sale had a great bag that I had coveted earlier in the season at almost 40% off which I promptly snatched up.

While being rung up by Jorge, I commented that the downstairs sales associates who had completely ignored me when I walked into Barney's made me feel uncomfortable, he not only apologized to me for their folly, but he even offered to escort me downstairs so I wouldn't feel awkward shopping on the first floor. Although I had no interest (or money for that matter) in shopping through the rest of the store, I was touched by his willingness to help a girl out.

As far as shopping goes, Barneys lives up to its name. Attitude, attitude attitude. I love it! Its better than a Parker Posey movie from Netflix.
All I have to say to everyone who hates it, go in there and EXPECT the service. You're paying, get it. I would have to say that a smile gets you the world, it's too bad I have to flash some cash  to get that smile back.
Barneys SF?

Sadly, I do not love the new Barneys in SF -- wait, maybe that's a good thing -- and can't imagine ever needing to set foot in there again (unless they are having some crazy sale). As I expected, being quite familiar with the previous occupant of this space (FAO Schwartz), the space just feels all kinds of cramped. I particularly felt this way in the shoe department, crammed into a tiny corner trying on shoes. Also, like other Barneys I've been to, I found the sales people are extremely lacking in... oh... I don't know, the ability to care AT ALL about trying to help you find whatever it is you might be looking for. My sales clerk seemed extremely bored, like maybe I was keeping him from watching reruns of The Days of Our Lives in the back room or something.

The clothes are amazing, sort of like museum pieces since I don't know many humans that can wear most of the stuff they feature. And I don't know anyone, personally, that can afford it. I did see a gorgeous Comme des Garcons blouse that I fell in love with. PM me if you have an extra $2200 lying around that you want to gift me so I can go buy it. Operators are standing by.

Never made it all the way up to the top, and I doubt I ever will. When I am on a massive spending spree, Neiman's is gonna get my business every time. Those sales people know how to be helpful. My gal literally had some kind of a super secret stash of all the BEST handbags that had just gone on sale, you should have seen the crowd around us trying to get their hands on that stuff. She had to beat one of the other sales ladies back with a stick... now that's what I call customer service. Too bad Barneys doesn't get it.

Yes kids, here's another questionnaire, this one designed to assist you in determining whether you should plan a shopping trip to the new Barney's New York store.  As usual, this questionnaire is not at all judgmental.

1. What is the most annoying thing to you about traveling?
     a.  The rude flight attendants
     b.  The cramped seats
     c.  When the Gulfstream is in for maintenance and you have to take the crappy Lear.

2.  You learn that your rich, childless Uncle has died.  What is the first thing you do?
     a.  Immediately call your father to console him on the loss of his brother
     b.  Immediately call your aunt to console her on the loss of her husband
     c.  Immediately put a deposit on a new Porsche

3.  How many real fur coats do you own?
     a.  None
     b.  One, but I inherited it
     c.  Umm, I don't know, but anyway what's your problem, asshole?  Everyone knows it's cold in San Francisco.

4.  You are informed by the Hostess that there is a 45 minute wait for the next table.  Do you:
     a.  Wait patiently
     b.  Go elsewhere
     c.  Loudly ask the Hostess if she knows just who the hell you are.

5.  What is your annual income?
     a.  Under $75,000
     b.  Under $200,000
     c.  I don't have income, silly.  I have Wealth.

6.  When you go grocery shopping, do you usually buy 1%, 2% or whole milk?
     a.  2%
     b.  Whole
     c.  I need to check with the servants.

If you answered c.  4 or more times, then Barney's New York might be just the place for you!

I originally wrote a bad review when it first opened, but am making up for it after having a delightful experience in the Co-op handbags department.  My wonderful sales associate Whitney, jumped through hoops to find me a practically sold out item.  She called every store in the nation and snagged me the very last one in brown.  On top of that, I requested that she find my friend one in black, and did just that.

I take back every bad thing I've said- customer services makes up for everything. And it's not that they don't have a lot of selection,  they're selective.

I was one of those people who grumbled when Barney's opened.  How many luxury goods department stores does SF need?  It's the Los Angelesization of San Francisco, I proclaimed...  I've always liked the non-ostentatious way SF had approaching the high-end.  It reminds me of New Orleans... All those people in the big mansions look just like anybody else.  Pretense was never visual... but that's another story.  Don't even get me started on Juicy Couture... those people boil my blood.

I arrived at Barney's in search of Costume Nacional 21.  I'd been to Saks, Nieman Marcus, and Bloomindale's (see yucky one star Bloomingdale's review).  Ready to be disappointed and appalled, I walk downstairs and head towards the fragrance counter.

I'm greeted by two guys.  I tell them what I'm looking for and they both actually knew what I was talking about (see yucky one star Bloomingdale's review) and were excited about it, too!  "21 notes," I said, "With so many, I'm curious to see what they come up with..."  One ran off to ask the CN rep who just happened to be there when they could expect it to arrive, while the other asks if I'm a perfume connoisseur and we start talking smells.  After hearing it could be up to a month, I asked them to show me what else they've got.  They enthusiastically shared their favorites and I bought both of them.

"Do you like skin products, too?" By this point, I'm practically giddy with delight.

By the time I walked out of that store, I had two bottles of amazing fragrances (Bois 1920 Sushi Impereale and the limited edition CN Intense), an appointment for a facial, beaucoup samples, and was scheduled to meet the co-founder of Le Labo Fragrances, who was going to be in the store on May 9.

I walked out of there feeling like a million bucks and not 'cause I'd just spent a bunch of money.  In Barney's, I found two guys who were exceedingly knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful.  In the stores I'd visited before, I got confused looks and rudeness.  These guys seemed downright excited when I told them why I was there.  That's the kind of interchange I want.  I don't buy nice stuff because I want to feel important.  I buy nice stuff because I'm old-fashioned and appreciate quality of materials, craftsmanship, and design.  When I meet other people who get that, it really brightens my day.

So... J & J, you guys have completely changed my feelings towards Barney's, introduced me to some wonderful niche fragrance lines, and have ultimately given me a very enriching experience.  Meeting Patrice from Le Labo was fascinating and inspirational and I'm so grateful to have been invited to participate in one of the sessions.  I'm a loyal customer and won't buy anything either of you have shown me from anyone else.  I have cousins if either of you is single.

Hello gorgeous!
My knees shaking, my heart pumping, a warm and fuzzy feeling deep in my stomach (actually a touch below it), I enter this Heaven of loveliness.

Barney's is an acquired taste, though.  If you are used to the Cavalli at Neiman's and Oscar at Saks, you may not like the edginess of Lanvin, Balenciaga, Rodarte, and other designers (some of whom you may not have heard of before).  Rather than Dom Perignon or Crystal, Barney's is like the Krug champaigne - better, but less for the mainstream and more for the connoisseurs.  When you wear a piece from here, people will stop you and ask.  Also, you probably will be the only one in the room wearing it.

I highly recommend Barbara in couture.  Of course the prices are high.  It's like going to French Laundry and taking a star off for price being high.  What do you expect?  Unique and elegant pieces are worth it.

But, you don't have to buy the entire outfit by Lanvin.  Get a top and get a skirt at Banana Republic and flats at Payless.  Or get a Balenciaga necklace and the rest of the outfit from Gap.

Oh, and the Marc Jacobs bag on bag - you can wear Old Navy head to toe with it and look very chic.

Oh, sadness. I was looking forward to Barney's opening sooo much. I love the Barney's in NY, which I visited oh-too-frequently when I lived on the East Coast. Alas, the buyers in the SF store don't seem to trust SF women as having fashion-forward tastes. I will say that the store clerks are very friendly here, which is nice indeed. However, if you really want the good stuff, call the NY store. They'll ship to you directly.

When I saw they were opening a store in San Francisco I thought great, here's one more place to burn money. And burn money you can. This place puts Wilkes to shame in the over the top price race. $1000 for a cotton T-shirt?? They have it. Lots of mens shoes well over $1000. Yep, can do. $400-$700 jeans ? Of course.

But the good thing for me was they carry my favorite suit maker, Isia. But so does Saks and Neiman Marcus, and they are the stores that will be getting my future suit bussiness. Barneys has to have the most arrogant sales staff I've ever encountered. Without going into all the details, they are outright rude, and you can be made to feel like they are doing you a big favor. Not the experience you want if your spending over $3000 on a suit. You can also expect a much longer wait for alterations then the other two stores mentioned. No more for me.

8/13/08 I have to give kudo's to Nadia, the only woman that works in the mens department and the only one that doesn't have her head up her ass. She knew there was an item I wanted and made the extra effort to let me know when it went on sale.

Finally San Fancisco gets a Barneys...and for those shoppers that are in the know this is a great place for up and coming as well as established, cutting edge designers...think Margiela, Lanvin, Rodarte, Balenciaga...  I mean Margiela in SF -- whaaaaawwwwhhhaaat!  LOVE IT!  The departments are certainly smaller than its LA and NY counterpart but nevertheless, this store still packs a punch!

I love the customer service of the San Franciscans!  And I must admit that they aren't as stuffy as the ones in Beverly Hills!  Very attentive and helpful!

Five stars for Barneys!  The one in NY is much better (of course), but at least we've finally got  one of our own here in SF.  I especially like the makeup counter and the shoe selection is to die for.  The prices are very very high, but you get what you pay for.  Five starz!

LANVIN, BALENCIAGA, McQueen, Oh My !

I've died and gone to runway heaven

Not my favorite Barney's but it is good to have one in my hometown (BIg up to SF, yo)

This Barney's is really small and so they cram a lot into the square footage... but I guess having more is better than too little. Regardless I am happy to finally have my fave designers available in SF, and not having to call NEW YORK or LA for more avant garde/ obscure designers.

I love that so many sales associates (SA) have moved from my other frequented department stores.. so I already have a rapport with the staff... WONDERFUL!!!!

I love the guys on the the 4th Floor Mens ... all really nice guys and really helpful... I love their selection of  Rod Keenan Hats esp. Fedoras (I love a good a hat).. and Christian Dior boots on 5th floor.

** I have to give a shout out to Barb ( Barbra, from the women's department). I have known her for years (from other boutique experiences) and now from shopping with my mom and sis at Barney's. She is soo cute with her big glasses, trademark bob and thin frame. She is a doll, super sweet, and chic in all black.

Complaint: I wish they had a restaurant, or at least a cafe, at this Barney's like in NYC....part of the experience of going to Barney's is a cocktail or lunch or a yummy snack after a long day of shopping ( all liquid meals, of course, because you have to fit into EUROPEAN sizes) Am I getting fatter or is Lanvin sizing getting smaller?...grrrr-- time to  call  CURVES (CURVES... THAT'S funny:)

Adrina is great. I've had her do my makeup on many occasions. She is relaxed, honest and an amazing artist. I trust her taste and her opinion completely She's never given me any "tude". Maybe by "tude" you mean that she didn't desperately fawn all over you. if you need someone to suck up to you, go to Neiman's where they'll "ooh" and "ahh" all over you, to sell you makeup that looks bad. The ladies at the Barney's Chanel counter seem to have too much respect for their customers and for themselves to do that.

I was so excited when I found out that Barney's New York was going to open up in our own little city by the bay.  I've never been to the one in NY, so I was eager to get a taste of this famous store.

Well...  what can I say?  It's cozy.  Very cozy.  I could have sworn that when the space was still FAO Schwartz it was much bigger.  What happened?

I'm all for walking, but I felt that the space was so compact that I kept having to climb stairs after barely looking at anything on display.  Up, up, up...  (yes, I know there are elevators, but that's not my point).

I must say that when Christmas shopping, my mom and I received great service.  I'm sorry, but I don't remember the salesgirl's name.  She worked in the men's department.  We were looking for a casual style coat for my husband - and this girl was awesome.  She really took the time to help us.  In the end, we bought a really nice coat.  Unfortunately, it ended up not fitting and we had to return it.

For the men - unless you're a stick, you're not going to fit anything in this store.  I wear between a Med/Lg women's size.  I tried on a size 44 men's coat (XL) and it was tight on me.  HELLO?

Anyway, the store is beautiful, but it's more like a multi-level boutique.  The fashions are hip, but not made for the average sized person.  If you don't believe me, just take a look at the size of the mannequins on the men's floors and you'll see what I mean.  Maybe if you're a young boy in your teens from a wealthy family you'll score a great wardrobe from here.

Here's why I prefer Bloomingdales  over Barney's:

- I hate being elbow to elbow with people when shopping. I'm a little claustrophobic like that. I need space people, space!

- To that biatch who gave me 'tude for not giving up the Marc Jacobs wristlet that I found first and that I snagged first, better luck next time. It's annoying self-entitled shoppers like you that make me dislike Barney's at times.

- Is it just me or is the store layout so ridiculously confusing?

Why I STILL shop at Barney's:

- Great for hard to find items. See note about the wristlet above. I didn't even find it at the Marc Jacobs store so I was ecstatic after finding it here.

- Excellent customer service

- Great sale rack

The Chanel counter here sucks.  The lady there Adrina is a total fake.  She was super nice when I bought  a bunch of stuff.  But when i came  back in to return one of the products her attitude change and she was a total bitch.  Don't give that counter business.  Buy your Chanel products at another Store.  It's not worth getting the tude from these people.

Bleh. Been twice and I don't think I'm going to shop here again.

The selection is okay, but isn't particularly unique or creative. They do have Nice Collective, which is my newest addiction but beyond that it's ho hum. There are better stores to shop for snooze brands like Prada and Theory (neither of which my fickle fashion snobbery butt would be caught dead in).

So maybe I was a fish out of water and shouldn't be reviewing Barneys in the first place? Perhaps, but service stunk too. A jacket I liked was set aside for me, but my sales person disappeared when I was ready to try it on. I later went to checkout and the sales person had me waiting forever while she worked on some other client's complex issue (perhaps give up the commission and pass me to one of the many free sales people?).

Finally the store itself was pretty cramped, you can only get to the mens area via a small elevator (unless you want to walk 6 floors). Getting up and down was tedious.

Barneys we're through before we ever even started.

Barneys on Union Square attempts to simulate the fashionable, exclusively chic and luxurious ambiance of Barneys New York in Manhattan.  I don't think SF can ever simulate Manhattan, but I guess one can always try.

I have been to both locations and each time they struck me as appropriate when shopping for a variety of men's look:  hip, elegant, business, classical preppy look, and in-style.  Their women's fashion struck me as too plain and classical sans luster, simply lacking in the edgy cool look that usually attracts me.

My mom and I have cruised this location a couple of times.  First time, she wandered around to checkout goodies for herself, nothing struck her fancy.  Last Friday afternoon we visited Barneys with the hopes of upgrading my dad's sweater wardrobe in preparation for their Germany trip.  While at the fifth floor location, we browsed through their selections of winter sweaters.  The variation catered to a wide range of male demographics:  young and hip, preppy,  classic, business, and the conservative professor look (my dad's genre!).  The prices were quite steep, though my mom would not hesitate to splurge for my dad as often times, she unhesitatingly indulges on luxury goods for herself.  We chose a couple of Italian sweaters.  One very cool gray cashmere sweater with black patches was on sale:  originally: $645.00, on sale for:  $299.00.

My mom thought it was a bargain to purchase a couple of sweaters for a little over $700.00!    Well, I guess the definition of  "bargain" is quite subjective in this case, eh?

The overall experience was great, we were lucky to be assisted by a very amiable and young sales staff.  Earlier some older guy in a suit brushed us off.  Saved by the hip young kid, this review gets a nice four stars.

In a nutshell...mediocre.  What a letdown.

I can't believe I've waited this long for a Barney's to open up in San Francisco, only to be completely underwhelmed.  The prices are the same.  The new-hip-sexy-modern-everyonecanbefashionable attitude is the same.  Even the fixtures look familiar in their art-deco/techie way.

However, the variety is lacking, the clothing is not strategically placed for lookie-loos (ME) and I can't figure out what half of the things in the cases are.  Are they hats?  Are they mittens?  Socks?  UNDER-ROOS?!  WHAT!?

All this may be a case of Oldster-itis, in which case Barney's is terribly posh and cool and beyond my 90 year old mentality, which is a VERY distinct possibility.

I just can't justify spending $800 on a pair of...leggings?  Sweater-vest?  A shirt-dickie?  EAR MUFFS?!  WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT THING?!
