Couture is the only place to find "cool" suits, the kind that you could only find if you went to Italy.  But unlike Italy, the prices are great.  The suits are one of a kind, very special.  And service is great.

Couture may be the very best men's store in the city. (They sell women's attire as well, but I could not comment)
I've been a loyal customer for the past 3 years and I can honestly say that you will not find a better experience anywhere else. David, the storeowner, is incredibly personable and will work hard to make sure that you are happy with your clothes and that they fit your budget.  The selection is incredible and David's tailoring is top notch. The most difficult part of visiting couture is choosing between all the different things you want to buy.

The best menswear store in the city.  By far.  Good sales!  1600 suits at 50% off can't be beat.  Great slim, modern fits in hard to find sizes too.  Make this your first stop--forget the bloomies or barneys.

Like the other reviewers here, I have nothing but positive things to say about Couture.  My experience was excellent and the quality of the clothes is quite good.  In order to give others a sense of the experience, I'll try to recap my interactions so others have a sense of how the program works and what to expect.

Purpose: I first went to couture to get some ideas for my wedding.  I did not end up getting my wedding clothes there, but I got clothes for the rehearsal dinner.

Experience: David knows his clothes and has a variety of styles (His style is reflected in the store, so don't expect an exceptionally broad array.  You're getting what looks good now at high quality).  He works hard to find the right fit and the right style for you and does not try to put you in something that will not look good on you because it's HOT today.  He picked out a few different options after understanding what I was looking for and we worked from there.

Tailoring: The tailoring is also high quality.  I have used a master tailor in SF before, and while VERY happy with his work, the tailor's at Couture do a more than respectable job.  You're buying nice clothes so unless you have a very favorite tailor that you know does exceptional work, use their tailoring (and get it included in your price).  These are nice clothes, so taking them to your local dry cleaner may compromise some quality of the fit.

Overall: This is not shopping at a department store...mid or high end.  This is someone directly helping you find something that looks really good at a very good quality.  There are other fine men's stores in the city and I have bought clothes there as well.  But I have returned to Couture because the clothes are good, the service is good, and the tailoring is good.

Be prepared to spend a little bit more than you would at Macy's, etc, but do your homework before going in and you'll be fine.  ;)

I agree wholeheartedly with Joshua E's review, this place is amazing, and so is the owner, David.

After my girlfriend forced me to donate nearly all of the clothes that I owned (due to not fitting properly or being out of style), I was in need of practically everything.
My past experiences with these kind of small specialty shops had been totally negative - condescending sales people who hawk over you in a neurotic and intimidating fashion.

This place is different.

David greeted us as we came in, took us upstairs, showed us the area where my size was, and then left us alone to try on and discuss what we liked, until we called him a little while later.

After picking out some discount items from upstairs, we headed down to the main floor, and I started to try on jeans, dress & casual pants. David offered us some wine, and we accepted.

I second the notion that David was extremely helpful in enabling me to make good choices. I quickly got over my past negative experiences with these kind of shops, and embraced letting David bring me things he thought would look good on me. I ended up buying 4 dress pants, 2 casual pants, a pair of jeans, 2 shirts, 2 sweaters, and a coat which went well with all the pants.

Couture was not on my list of places to check out either. David says he doesn't advertise much, mostly relying on word-of-mouth.

I would have thought that this high level of personalized service could not be found in this day and age. It is a gem of a find!

I can't say enough good things about this place. I will return soon to replace the suits my girlfriend made me donate...

My business partner introduced me to David when he brought his Brioni suit here for some alterations. After getting back, it looked amazing. I've since bought a few items here and have been continually impressed.

Alterations are only a small part of the business. Amazing men's clothing, mostly from Italy, are beautifully displayed. Prices are also very reasonable.

I recently got a white Zegna suit and had trouble putting together an outfit that worked well with the multi-color pastel lining. David assembled a brilliant outfit that would rival that found next door at Wilkes. Thanks!

If dressing well is important to you, check out this store, you are sure to be pleased.

This place is absolutely terrific.

Beautiful suits, shirts, ties, etc. and unparalleled service.

I wanted to buy a suit for my wedding.  It was also the first nice suit I've bought since I could afford to buy a nice suit.

My search started right here on Yelp, I went over to http://www.yelp.com/me... and read many suggestions by various people about where to buy a suit in San Francisco.  Lots of great suggestions.

I created a map: http://maps.google.com... of all the places I wanted to look at, and I was off.

Couture wasn't originaly on my list, but I walked by it as it was next to two others I looked at.  When I walked in I was greeted by David Yahid, the owner, and he was available to answer any question I had, but at the same time he gave me time and space to look around.

Downstairs they have all the newer designs, at full price, and upstairs older designs all sold at half-price (great deals).

I looked a few suits I liked, but wasn't quite ready to make the decision.

A week later, I came back, with my fiance, and looked around some more.  David recognized me from my previous visit and was terrific to talk with.  He gave me excellent advice on the suits, without being overly salesmanlike.

Since all their tailoring is done right there, I think maybe by David himself, he continually gave me feedback on how he would tailor the suit I was looking at to make it fit me perfect.  He was very concious about making sure that the suit I bought fit me perfect.

I had narrowed it down to 3 suits I liked, 2 from the half-price racks up stairs, and one of the newer designs.  Ultimately the newer design was the one I liked, but I wasn't sure I wanted to spend that much on it.

David then helped lay the suits out under the light, and arranged them with different color shirts and ties, to help get a feel for exactly how they would look.  He suggested I wear the jacket outside to see how it looks under the sun (but it was unfortunately a bit cloudy that day).

All in all he was extremely helpful in letting me make a good choice.

Also, with my concern over the price of my favorite suit, David said don't worry about the price, pick out the suit that you really love.  He wasn't kidding, because he was able to give me a great deal on the suit with a shirt and tie, and then ended up throwing in cufflinks, a hankerchief for the pocket, and all the tailoring for free.

He's still doing the tailoring now, but if I remember, I'll post pictures of me wearing the final outfit.

Couture isn't the place to buy a super cheap suit, but it does seem the place to get a great value, and a beautiful, well tailored suit.

All in all, I can't recommend Couture enough.  Such great suits, and such amazing service, you can't go wrong.
